Opéra Pipo is an aesthetic project taking shape in Nice. We aim to create a space for gathering, living and exchange. This name encompasses an open category through which a large number of people can interact and a wide range of activities can take place through a form of play.

This ‘game’ reconsiders ideas surrounding the aesthetic proposition, production, value, interest, storytelling, and the necessity of doing, of being or not being, of being absent or present within the art world.

The urgency of coming together around art in contexts other than those of mere display and promotion, which often lack real intellectual or social stakes, and of exploring other spheres and ways of working, drives our desire. We also wish to share our interests in specific art scenes that are under-represented in Nice and, more broadly, across France.

There are four of us artists, which means our proposals will be varied, both in the choice of exhibitions and in their conception.

Our roles and tasks are constantly shifting. It is important to us to consider creation as something plural, rather than something confined to our own individual practices. The whole is in a state of constant flux. We believe it is important not to delegate the production, exhibition or dissemination of the creative act.

While paying attention to the more subtle and minimal aspects of artistic practice, we also wish to primarily promote solo exhibitions, and, in certain cases, duo exhibitions.

Throughout the duration of each exhibition, invited artists will also be free to propose accompanying events such as screenings, readings and listening sessions, on a weekly basis.

Of course, nothing is set in stone: the protocol outlined here aims to maintain an ongoing dialogue with whatever may emerge in the moment.

Opéra Pipo allows us, through our invitations, to displace and create the artistic scenes within which we wish to evolve as artists; an imitation that is no less self-serving than it is endogenous.

This must remain feasible in terms of our finances and personal resources. We organise an exhibition whenever we feel the desire to do so, whatever its point of departure, and simply because we want to.

We invite artists with whom we wish to collaborate in building a space to talk about art, share a meal and ask questions differently.

The artists involved throughout the programme are considered collaborators, friends, …
